Does smart film yellow or go hazy?

Yes — it can. We would rather tell you that than have you discover it in year three. Here is exactly what causes yellowing, how quickly it happens, and what separates film that yellows from film that does not.

The honest position: all PDLC yellows eventually. Quality film shows slight discolouration after roughly ten years, visible only when held against clear glass. Budget film can yellow noticeably within one to two years on a sunny elevation.

Why it happens

Two separate mechanisms are usually at work, and they are frequently confused.

Yellowing is UV degradation of the liquid-crystal layer and its adhesives. Ultraviolet light breaks down the polymer matrix over time, shifting the film's colour warm. Film manufactured with UV inhibitors resists this for many years; film without them does not.

Hazing is different — it is a loss of clarity in the clear state, so the glass never looks properly transparent. Some haze is inherent to PDLC (good film sits under 5%), but haze that increases over time signals degradation of the crystal dispersion, usually from heat or moisture.

A third failure gets misread as yellowing: edge delamination, a brownish discolouration creeping in from the perimeter. That is almost always chemical attack from acid-cure silicone sealant, not UV.

How to avoid it

  • Specify film with UV inhibitors in the adhesive — ask for it in writing
  • Use neutral-cure sealant only; acid-cure silicone causes edge delamination
  • Choose laminated glass over film for any sun-exposed or external elevation
  • Ask for the measured haze figure — under 5% in the clear state
  • Avoid ammonia and solvent cleaners entirely
  • On west-facing glazing, pair PDLC with a heat-reflective or low-E build-up

Common questions

Can yellowed film be restored?

No. UV degradation of the crystal layer is permanent. The panel has to be replaced. This is precisely why the upfront specification matters so much more than the upfront price.

Does yellowing affect how it switches?

Not initially — early yellowing is cosmetic. But the same UV exposure that yellows the film eventually degrades switching performance too, so yellowing is a reliable early warning.

Is indoor film safe from yellowing?

Much safer, yes. Internal partitions away from direct sun see very little UV, and quality film in that setting routinely passes fifteen years with no visible change.

How do I tell if my film has UV inhibitors?

You cannot tell by looking — you have to ask for the manufacturer's specification sheet. Any supplier unwilling to provide it should be treated with caution.
